Your hearing is more connected to your hormones than you might think. Estrogen receptors
in the cochlea mean that shifting hormone levels during perimenopause can affect how you
process speech in noisy environments, detect subtle sound differences, and maintain
auditory focus.
These exercises are inspired by the LACE (Listening and Communication Enhancement)
protocol and auditory training research. Regular practice may help maintain and
sharpen your listening skills.
The Science
Estrogen and progesterone receptors are present throughout the auditory system,
including the cochlea and auditory cortex. Declining levels during perimenopause
may be associated with changes in speech-in-noise perception, tinnitus onset,
and noise sensitivity. Auditory training exercises have been shown to improve
speech understanding and listening effort.

Use Headphones
For the best experience and accurate results, please use headphones or earbuds.
Some exercises rely on precise audio levels.
Volume Check
Adjust your device volume to a comfortable level.
You should be able to hear this tone clearly without it being too loud.
Never use hearing exercises at high volume. If you experience ringing, pain, or discomfort, stop immediately and lower your volume.
Tap "Play Test Tone" and adjust your volume until it is comfortable.

Core
Speech in Noise
~3 min / 10 trials
Identify spoken words against background noise. Noise level adapts to your performance. The strongest evidence-based exercise for real-world hearing.
Auditory Discrimination
~2 min / 10 trials
Hear two tones and decide if they are the same or different. Tests pitch, duration, and intensity perception.
Gap Detection
~2 min / 8 trials
Detect a brief silent gap within a continuous tone. Gap gets shorter as you improve. Exercises your ability to detect brief pauses in sound.
Dual-Task Listening
~3 min / 6 trials
Remember a tone sequence AND a visual pattern simultaneously. Trains the auditory-cognitive integration that daily life demands.
